ARTIST BIOS

The Epichorus

Priya Darshini – Vocals

Taking her roots from Indian Classical music, Priya’s knowledge of music from all over the world has resulted in a fresh, imaginative and fascinating new sound. She displays an exciting combination of range, technique, unconventional compositions, a feminist perspective, and a prodigious voice that truly sets her apart from other vocalists. Priya has collaborated with a wide range of artists from Pearl Jam; GRAMMY® Award winners Roy “Futureman” Wooten; Jeff Coffin, Philip Lassiter, Silk Road Ensemble’s Shane Shanahan; virtuoso ukulele player Jake Shimabukuro, Dave Eggar, Karsh Kale, House of Waters, and many more. In 2020, Priya released her sophomore solo album – Periphery – on Chesky Records, and was nominated for the 63rd Annual GRAMMY® Award for Best New Age Album.

Zach Fredman - Oud

Zach Fredman is the Oudist, composer, and bandleader for the Epichorus.  He grew up on classical guitar and studied that instrument as an undergraduate before passing to the Oud at the spell of Hamza El Din.  He has studied with Arabic master Bassam Saba, on the Oud, Violin and Nay, and spent time at the feet of leaders of the Arabic musical communities in Jerusalem: from Iraqi and Moroccan Piyut music, to the Baqashot night ceremonies of the Aleppo Jews.

Megan Gould – Violin

Megan Gould is one of NYC’s most versatile performers of Middle Eastern, Greek, and popular music. Her comfort within a wide range of styles, her responsiveness to other musicians on stage, and a soulful improvisational style make Megan a sought-after element in many musical projects. Since completing a Master’s Degree in Ethnomusicology (with a concentration on the Middle East) from the University of London, she has performed around the world in cities as far-flung as Paris, London, Budapest, Copenhagen and Dubai, and has toured extensively throughout the US.

Max ZT – Hammered Dulcimer

Lauded as the “Jimi Hendrix of Hammered Dulcimer" by NPR, and a "Force of nature" by NY Music Daily, Max ZT is an innovator of the instrument. Taking his roots from classical Irish folk music, Max has transplanted his compositional techniques to both Senegal, where he studied the Mandinko technique with the Cissoko griot family, and to Mumbai, India, where he received a grant to study under the great santoor master Pandit Shivkumar Sharma. His fresh perspective and bold experimentalism have been the backbone to beautiful, complex, and genuine compositions, while his unorthodox playing style has been a pioneering force in revolutionizing dulcimer techniques.

Daniel Ori – Upright Bass

Daniel Ori is an Israeli born bassist and composer, and a prominent young voice in the New York contemporary jazz and world music scene. He has performed worldwide and has shared the stage with renown musicians. Ori is a scholarship recipient and graduate of the Berklee College of Music in Boston as well as a winner of the 2009 ASCAP Jazz Composers Award.

Rich Stein – Percussion

Rich Stein hails from Virginia Beach, VA and plays all kinds of percussion. He got his start at the age of 10, stating it was a typical instrumental style for a kid since he was always banging on pots and pans. Even at that early age Rich knew he wanted to rock for a living and began to take drum lessons. Rich played in school band and continued percussion throughout college in Boston. After Boston Rich felt it was a “natural progression…to move down [to NY] and do music professionally. Where else are you gonna go if you wanna play music?”
