DCSC April 27: Tap Mandrus

  • Down County Social Club

Tap Madrus aka Patrick Surdam is a wonderful creative spirit, lead singer and guitarist of The Nice Ones . Starting his music career over a decade ago, Patrick thrives in this intimate setting, offering soulful interpretations of cover material ranging from Hank Williams to Nina Simone, as well as acoustic renditions of Nice Ones' songs and Tap Madrus' solo material.

Tap Madrus performances are intimate and engaging. Switching between guitar and Charango (a traditional 10 string guitar native to the Andes), Tap Madrus creates a vibrant atmosphere that captivates the attention of the audience.

His impeccable guitar playing and lilting vocals come together to deliver a hauntingly beautiful evening of entertainment.

DCSC May 11: Quiet in the Head

  • Down County Social Club

“Quiet In The Head” is the ongoing musical project of guitarist Seamus Maynard, violinist Jonathan Talbott and many guest musicians. Their original acoustical music has evolved over many years of playing together and is always an exploration of texture and melody. There are echoes of familiar influences from middle eastern and eastern european music but ultimately searches far and wide for new sounds. Improvisation plays a large part in Quiet In The Head's compositions but the core of the music is through-composed. Significant instrumental technique never overshadows the inherent musicality, beauty, and sometimes strangeness of the soundscapes created by the group.

DCSC June 22: Francesca Shanks

  • Down County Social Club

Francesca Shanks’ primary instrument is baritone ukulele, but don’t pigeonhole her as a quirky girl who sings cute songs. Shanks’ writing is tight with metaphor and naked with intent, nostalgia and longing, evoking artists like Leonard Cohen, Lou Reed, John K. Samson and Kathleen Hanna.

Shanks’ aim is to use songwriting to explore the gray areas integral to our humanity. Her songs are direct and conversational, circling around themes of nature, god, waiting, death and time: Birds swoop through words about love and divination, muddy water carries away lost innocence and the claws of a cat are ridden into the night sky.

Shanks has always been a writer (she’s now logged several years as a reporter, editor and columnist), and spent her early years in various bands, from keyboard-driven no-wave to harmonic freak-folk.

From the foothills of Western Maine comes GoldenOak, a folk group whose genre-blending sound has them steadily emerging as a musical force in New England. Conceived in the winter of 2013, their woodsy, modern folk sound weaves together rich four-part harmonies and piercing melodic lines over a unique blend of cello, guitar, trumpet, and cajón. Shifting effortlessly from energetic swing to dreamy ballad, they’re as comforting as a campfire and as heart-shaken as a summer squall.

Whiskey Jack String Band

  • Down County Social Club

A thunder clap rang off that mountain; and off that mountain a bird did go. Some call him a gray jay, some, a camp robber. Others know him to be the Whiskey Jack.

Just like that no-good scoundrel of a bird, the Whiskey Jack String Band will steal. Steal your ears, your attention, and if you get too close to the banjo player, make sure to check for your wallet after the show.

Hailing from the northwest hills of Connecticut, Whiskey Jack is an old-time trio playing traditional tunes and original compositions. Steeped in local lore and inspired by the beautiful Berkshire Mountains, the Whiskey Jack String Band won't disappoint those looking for a little bit of that hillbilly sound.

Whiskey Jack consists of Andy Lundeen (banjo), Molly Peterson (guitar/clarinet), and Ryan Williams (mandolin/guitar).

Guitarist and singer and vocalist Meaghan Witri, joined by bassist John Merritt, offer a unique and textured sound with roots across folk/rock, classical and jazz.

MUSIC: Ryan Foss + Chad Messier

  • The Down County Social Club

Raised by wolves in the mountains of Transylvania, Ryan Foss is a modern day "Romulus and Remus," the wolf boy raised on rhythm and blues. Preppy good looks, honest demeanor, distinctive voice and upbeat melodies, "relevant lyrics felt with emotion," these might best describe Ryan Foss as a musician and recording artist. He's an "old soul" with youthful exuberance who plays in the tradition of the poet troubadour. His songs are filled with layers of chords, combined with hooks and rhythms, plus tinges of afro-beats and jazzy surf riffs.
