From the foothills of Western Maine comes GoldenOak, a folk group whose genre-blending sound has them steadily emerging as a musical force in New England. Conceived in the winter of 2013, their woodsy, modern folk sound weaves together rich four-part harmonies and piercing melodic lines over a unique blend of cello, guitar, trumpet, and cajón. Shifting effortlessly from energetic swing to dreamy ballad, they’re as comforting as a campfire and as heart-shaken as a summer squall.

DCSC July 20: The Page Turners, Carolyn Kendrick & Jake Howard

  • Down County Social Club

The Page Turners, Carolyn Kendrick and Jake Howard, are an award-winning group (2016 Freshgrass Best Duo) who have a strong foothold in the acoustic music scene. They became musical friends as students of Berklee College of Music, and started playing together  through the Berklee American Roots Program. From those experiences, they began to play music together more and grew from goofy friends who loved BBQ and bluegrass, into goofy band mates as well. The Page Turners write sharp and adept original music and put new twists on old favorites. They like to blend their love of bluegrass, whiskey-fueled old-time, country music, swing, and fearless song-writing into one all-purpose seasoning of good ole' fashioned Roots Music.

"The Page Turners harness the best and deepest parts of bluegrass and old-time sounds as their own unique springboard for some wonderful new music. I love what Carolyn and Jake are doing and can’t wait to hear more!” ~ Bruce Molsky

DCSC June 22: Francesca Shanks

  • Down County Social Club

Francesca Shanks’ primary instrument is baritone ukulele, but don’t pigeonhole her as a quirky girl who sings cute songs. Shanks’ writing is tight with metaphor and naked with intent, nostalgia and longing, evoking artists like Leonard Cohen, Lou Reed, John K. Samson and Kathleen Hanna.

Shanks’ aim is to use songwriting to explore the gray areas integral to our humanity. Her songs are direct and conversational, circling around themes of nature, god, waiting, death and time: Birds swoop through words about love and divination, muddy water carries away lost innocence and the claws of a cat are ridden into the night sky.

Shanks has always been a writer (she’s now logged several years as a reporter, editor and columnist), and spent her early years in various bands, from keyboard-driven no-wave to harmonic freak-folk.

Himalayan Singing Bowl Meditation, Saturday May 13th in the Barn

  • The Barn at Race Brook Lodge

Himalayan Singing Bowls produce sounds which invoke a state of deep relaxation. Warm harmonic tones are made as an experienced and trained player gently strikes these rare, centuries old instruments, which vary in size and shape. Three dozen hand-made bronze bowls are used, producing subtle acoustic vibrations in the room. The harmonizing pulsations move through and around the body.

Clinical studies have shown that these sessions can lower heart rate and blood pressure, stimulate the production of endorphins, and activate the immune system. They can also reduce anxiety, PTSD symptoms and stress hormones, while slowing down over-active brain wave patterns.

Participants can choose to relax by laying down, or sitting on a cushion/chair. There is no effort required, and no experience is necessary. Sessions last about an hour.

DCSC May 11: Quiet in the Head

  • Down County Social Club

“Quiet In The Head” is the ongoing musical project of guitarist Seamus Maynard, violinist Jonathan Talbott and many guest musicians. Their original acoustical music has evolved over many years of playing together and is always an exploration of texture and melody. There are echoes of familiar influences from middle eastern and eastern european music but ultimately searches far and wide for new sounds. Improvisation plays a large part in Quiet In The Head's compositions but the core of the music is through-composed. Significant instrumental technique never overshadows the inherent musicality, beauty, and sometimes strangeness of the soundscapes created by the group.
