The InBetweens

  • Race Brook Lodge Race Brook Lodge Sheffield United States (map)

The InBetweens, an electric guitar trio that thrives on improvised tangents, disparate sonic dimensions, rhythmic propulsion, and a deep energetic chemistry, emerged in 2002. Mike Gamble (electric guitar/effects), Noah Jarrett (double bass), and Conor Elmes (drums) studied with some of the great masters of their instruments and their crafts (Bob Moses, George Garzone, John Lockwood, John Abercrombie) at The New England Conservatory, in Boston, MA.

As improvisors, they began to “collectively weave melodies and vamps into intricate spider webs of rhythm.” These experiments created a new sound and dimension to the palette of improvisation and experimental music; a sound that is uniquely theirs. "Named for their propensity to play ‘in between’ styles…” the band takes an approach that is equally edgy and lyrical.

THE INBETWEENS

The InBetweens spent the next 15 years creating a buzz in the Brooklyn and NY improvised music scene. They have toured Europe, the Northeast, the Midwest, New Orleans, and the West Coast and created many mainstays in the Brooklyn music scene.  New York Times’ Nate Chinen explained “this exploratory trio belongs to a social network of musicians who filter jazz protocols through an indie-rock lens”.

The InBetweens have five recordings up to date: two self-released albums: “Inbetweens” and “A Long Time Gone”, three records officially released on Madison WI’s Layered Music: “Quantum Cowboy”, “Out On A Limb”, and “Somniloquy.” Upon the release of their 3rd album, Nels Cline (guitarist WILCO) said "The Inbetweens are dangerous in the best way.”

The trio has a brand spanking new album ready to release on the heels of their upcoming tour in May/June ‘24.  While maintaining their intensely trippy chemistry of the past 20 years, the new album ventures into new and slowly unraveling territories and primitive sonic landscapes.

Race Brook Lodge is a hidden gem in The Berkshires, at the foot of Mt. Race and a short hike from the Appalachian trail. The yoga & event barn at Race Brook is simultaneously rustic and sublime, steeped in hundreds of years of New England history. The Stagecoach Tavern is unpretentious fine dining, exquisite farm-to-table cuisine in a relaxed atmosphere. Much of the food is sourced from Race Farm, right on the property!
